It’s hard to not be completely pulled into the photography world of photographer Valentina of Je Suis Val Photography. Her work is incredibly surreal and captures emotions so deep it’s hard not to feel them. She has tried almost every style of photography and is now fully entrenched in surreal portraits. The colours in her works feel muted yet saturated at the same time. They don’t overpower the image but they make it part of what it is and add to its beautifully haunting feel.
Where are you from?
I'm from Italy.
How did you get interested in photography?
I had a dark moment in my life, some years ago... I was looking for light, and I found it in photography.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Usually I like to use my 6th sense, then I start with just an idea, I go out and I try to see and feel something in the location, then I shoot. When I am at home, in front of my device, I try to put in my photo a postproduction inspired to what I felt in that moment.
Do you edit your own photos or do you use a retoucher?
I retouch my images by myself.
How would you describe your photography style?
My photography could be emotional, oneiric, visionary... I dunno what exactly. I always put in my images some symbols.
In your opinion what is the single most important tool of a photographer?
Well, I think that the best is the eye, but must be connected with something inside to be different.
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why that place?
I'd like to go to Ireland. It is my dream since I was young girl. I love that scenery, full of melancholy. I would lose myself in that place. But I have to say that I even love Irish music :)
Do you work alone or do you have a team that helps you on photo shoots?
I work alone... actually it is still a hobby for me; only in weddings do I work with another photographer.
Are you self-taught or did you go to school for photography?
I'm self-taught, since 3 years. I only went to school to learn how to use my reflex [camera], then I started shooting and studying with tutorials online.
What is your favourite mythological creature?
Omg, my mythological creature is the Melusina; she's half woman and half fish or snail; she has long hair and in her hands a hair brush and a little mirror. She was a medieval fairy.
Which brand of equipment do you use? Why did you choose that brand?
I started with Canon EOS 20D, but she died and I turned to Nikon. Actually I have a D3200, entry level category, 50 mm 1.8G, 18-105 mm. I dream to have one day the D750!!
What is your favourite lens?
My favourite lens would be the 35mm 1.8 but I still don't have it :D
Do you prefer shooting in a studio or outdoors? Why do you have that preference?
I like to shoot outdoor, because I live in high mountain so I have the best locations ever here!
How has your work evolved from when you first started, to now?
Well, I started with a lot of portraits... really a lot. I tried glamour, nudes... but I love to be a visionary photographer so during the time I tuned into that [her current style], I had learned more about Photoshop.
Do you prefer Oreo or Fudgee-O cookies? Or perhaps some other sweet food?
Neither of them! I literally adore licorice!!
