Can I let you all in on a little secret? One of my absolutely favourite photographers right now is Stefan Gesell. His work is everything I love about art. Bold colours, beautiful women, dark and macabre settings and imagery, and the work has a very Mad Max Wastelands vibe to it.
The first time I saw his work I was hooked. I found it like the photographic version of oil painter Chris Mars. It’s truly unique, visually unsettling and beautiful all at the same time. Stefan was gracious enough to do a short interview and share some of his work.
Where are you from?
I was born in Markshorrgast/Kulmbach and now I live in Munich.
How did you get started in photography?
I started in 2005 with a 3 megapixel Pentax - before that time I just took some pictures on vacation with a small "pocket camera".
What kind of camera do you use and why did you choose that specific one?
I use a Nikon D800 and a Sigma Quattro sd - but I don´t really know why. Probably the convincing force of the seller ;)
What do you want people to feel when they see your work?
I want to show my fantasies. Optimally the viewer feels the same as me.
What's in your camera bag?
I don´t have a camera bag. But if I had one, there would be a protein bar and a banana in it.
If you were not a photographer, what job would you have?
Probably I would be a locomotive driver or a pirate. :)
How long does a typical shoot take?
The actual shooting never takes longer than 10 minutes. But the preparation (Make Up/ Styling) takes a lot of time!
How long does it take you to edit your photos?
Do you want to know the truth? I guess... ;) It never takes longer than 30 minutes to edit my photos.
Where do you get the props you use for your shoots? Do you make them yourself?
Mostly I buy the material in home improvement centers and/or hardware stores. My team and I build all the props and costumes ourselves.
Without my team, I would be nothing.
How many people make up your team? And what kind of backgrounds do they have?
My team is about 5 people: Rassamee, my wife and model, KC, Sanchez, Frisco and me. They are all models and we build the props, costumes and make up.
What is your favourite lens to shoot with? Why?
My favourite lens is a 24-70 mm, because I’m too lazy, to always change it ;)
Most of my pictures are taken in a wide angle perspective.
What kind of music do you like to listen to?
Rammstein!!!! :D :D :D
What do you think the differences are between European photographers compared to American photographers?
I think American photographers are so much more creative and inspiring! The people in Europe, especially in Germany like photos more "classical".
Any specific people you'd like to collaborate with?
Yes, but they have assed away.... except one: David LaChapelle. I would love to see how he works and takes his photos! He is amazing!
Do you prefer Oreo or Fudgee-O cookies? Or perhaps some other sweet treat?
Fudgee-O!!!! Because they don´t exist in Germany. Could you send me some????? ;)
